India’s Purana Qila

The Purana Qila (Old Fort) is situated opposite the Pragati Maidan. It is said to be the capital of Pandavas. The evidence like pottery dating back to 1000 BC, has found within the fort premises and the pieces of pottery have been recovered from other sites associated with Mahabharata. With its massive rubble wall and imposing gateway houses, the fort has been witness to a lot of events in history. This is a 500 years old fort, and has been powerful and administration for many rulers. The legendary Rajput ruler Prithviraj Chauhan ruled here who was defeated by Ahmed Shah Abdali in the battle of Panipat. It was after the defeat of Mughal Emperor Humayun that the fort was called Shergarh by Afghan King Sher Shah Suri. He also added some more buildings within the fort. There are three gigantic entrance gateways that Purana Qila but only one remains open now which is called the Bara Darwaza. The fort has a small archaeological museum just inside the main gate. The top of the Gateway offers some fabulous views of the city. The fort has an impressive mosque called Qila-i-Kuhran Masjid, built by Sher Shah in 1541.
